Top Chef has returned for its sixth season and this time its taking the heat of the kitchen to Las Vegas. Padma, Tom and the brand new crew of 17 chefs are ready for a bran new season and so am I. Last season was my first full run in awhile and I’m surprised to be excited for the new season so let’s get started! Hopefully we don’t have any Debby Downer’s this time around, AKA Leah, but I’m sure we won’t know that tonight anyway. The cast was featured first thing with several award winners in the mix and others were trained by some of the most famous chefs in the world. There is also a set of brothers in the mix which could prove interesting.
As the chefs starting entering the house it was obvious they had an eclectic cast this season. Mattin will be one of the international chefs this season, seems to be they always do well. Some chefs found links with where they are from while others found they were the only ones from their states. The house seemed very “down home” this season after last season’s apartment like style. Brings a new energy to the opening part of the show at least. Seems they are also letting people MOVE into the house this time, rather then doing the Quick Fire early to take someone out. Not sure if they’ll throw one at them soon but I wouldn’t doubt it. The brothers were then introduced, Michael and Brian and haven’t seen each other in a long time. It seems they are a bit different at least while Mike recognized another Mike…. seems there are links all over the place.

Tonight Top Chef began its two part finale in New Orleans where next week either Stefan, Fabio, Hosea or Carla will become the next Top Chef. After a few months/weeks being off the show all four met back up looking a bit different. Carla had straighter hair, Fabio had a mohawk while both Hosea and Stefan were both still bald. For their first challenge back on the show Emeril Lagasse would be their guest judge. The first Quick Fire was a bit interesting considering they wouldn’t be competing. Jamie, Jeff and Leah then walked out of a huge mansion and it was somewhat creepy. Why is Leah back!?!?!??! The three now had a chance to get back into the competition and the winner of the Quick Fire would join the four in the elimination challenge for a chance to win. It’s not really fair, but its a common reality twist which Top Chef did do well. So I commend them considering NOBODY saw this coming.
To get back into the challenge the three had to make a craw fish dish. Of course Leah, who I thought I was rid of, didn’t know how to cook craw fish so things are (thankfully) looking good. After their limited time to cook it was time for Emeril to taste their dishes. Leah made a craw fish soup, Jeff made craw fish and grits while Jamie made corn cake with craw fish sauce. None of the judges really had any words of positive or negative, all were neutral so it was anyone’s game to return. Emeril ended up choosing Jeff and yet another twist was revealed: Jeff had to WIN the elimination challenge to stay, he didn’t even have to go to Judge’s Table to be eliminated. After Jamie and Leah went for their second time the final five were off to Emeril’s restaurant. There they talked about one of them winning the game and all wanted it. Fabio wanted it to help support his mother while Carla wanted it to help support her husband and step son. The other guys, Stefan and Hosea, started bickering yet again. Apparently nothing has changed since leaving New York.

On the previous Top Chef Leah stayed while Jamie packed her knives. She killed her celery and that’s the only reason she went while Leah stayed without any thought of sending her home for quitting, twice! The following day Stefan was glad that Jamie was gone while Leah tried to redeem herself, but she’s so gloomy that it’s hard to believe anything she says that’s positive. At the Quick Fire challenge the final five entered into a kitchen full of eggs. Padma then introduced Wylie Dufresne, their guest judge, who would be tasting a surprise dish that revolved around eggs. Fabio wanted to do some chemical mixing to bring a new flavor to the eggs while Hosea was trying some type of dish that he’s never done before. Leah also tried some scientific foodery, Stefan went with poached eggs while Carla went with green eggs and ham! How fun. In the end Wylie chose Fabio, Hosea and Leah for the bottom while Carla showed everyone up with her green eggs and ham. Go Dr. Suess!
With Carla winning the Quick Fire she gained an advantage in the Elimination Challenge. Each then chose their knives, each having a famous chef’s name on it. Each of the famous chefs were asked what their last supper would be, and the chefs would be cooking that for them. It was huge pressure cooking for such famous chefs and Charla’s advantage was to swap with anyone. She chose to keep her chef since he likes peas, making them immediately bffs apparently. That night the group went to dinner at Harold’s restaurant. He won the first season and it gave them a bit of insight to what their future might hold. Whole Foods was their destination the next day and it was their last time shopping. At the store Stefan made Hosea a bit angry as he tried to “throw him off his game” and it seemed to work as Hosea wasted time complaining rather then shopping.

The last episode of 13 Fear is Real saw the killer being killed off but tonight a new one was born. With Leah back in the group it was time to move yet again, this time to their most gruesome location yet. A slaughter house was their new home, dead animals and all. Their night began by assigning bedrooms: the girls in their own cubicle while Nasser/Ted and Adam/Cody took the other two rooms. When the sun rose the Mastermind revealed that Rodney was the killer and that the death box was reappearing in the kitchen. There was no lock and key this time around but the player who wanted it did have to remove it in secret. Everyone scrambled to look for the Death Box with Erica grabbing it first. She was one of the potential killers while Rodney held the power but this time she was really it. Nobody saw her grab the power and with her reputation last time she may not be seen as the killer, which is good for her.
When night fell yet again Cody get paranoid about being killed off and sealed his bedroom door shut as to avoid the killer. Um what if roommate Adam has the box? Luckily he doesn’t but still, a safe yet very risky move on Cody’s part. Ted wasn’t worried about being killed off though as he searched on his own for the now taken Death Box. Being that the girls were sleeping and Ted was alone, Erica looked to make a move. She grabbed the box and moved into the kitchen where Ted sped off. He saw what she was holding and ran away to avoid it. Knowing that Erica had the box Ted went to Nasser and revealed the information. Ted wants to control Erica into “clipping” people that he wants, it’s smart but with Nasser now knowing things may spiral out of control. Lets hope so!

On the last Top Chef 5 Jeff, and sadly not Leah, went home. He got beat by an All Star in his pair off which sent him up against the best in the bottom three and ultimately sent him home. The morning after the elimination of Jeff both Stefan and Fabio realized that they do have a chance of going home. Both felt like they received a second chance and were ready for the next round tasks. Hosea was only worried about taking down the “Euro” chefs, being that he’s the last American guy. Being down to only six chefs there is no room for failure, you know I’m talking to Leah, and their guest judge Eric Ripert was going to weed out the weak. His specialty was speed and technique where fish filleting was the task. The first round was cleaning and butterflying a sardine. They only had five minutes to do so with Carla doing horrible, Leah doing well, Stefan doing well, Jamie doing ok, Fabio doing pretty good and Hosea doing eh. He’s a seafood guy so he should have done better and somehow Leah and Stefan won the round. WHAT?
All but Carla and Jamie went to round two where they had to fillet a bigger fish. Leah gave up with only a few minutes left, showing her normal negativity, while Fabio left out a ton of meat knocking both out. That left Stefan and Hosea in the final heat: peeling and filleting fresh water eel. It was dead but continued to move, making things a bit freaky. In the end Stefan won the Quick Fire, giving him an advantage in the elimination challenge and showing the Euro guys aren’t going down without a fight. The next day the crew went to Eric Ripert’s restaurant for lunch but really it was for their challenge. Six dishes would be brought out for them to try which in return one of them would have to cook from taste. All were kind of shocked when the knife block came out to draw their dishes. Haven’t they seen past seasons? Stefan’s reward was the ability to choose his own dish and he picked the lobster. Jamie hated the dish she picked, which wasn’t looking too good, but nobody really had an advantage with this one.

Tonight the 13 Fear is Real killer was revealed and in doing so things were sent into a tailspin. After last weeks move to a haunted fort the remaining eight players were led to a new location: a haunted school. Before the move a few of the guys decided to scare the girls during the night. The girls, along with Ted, slept right through the noise and the guys ended up freaking out themselves. They saw a light at the end of a tunnel, finding a “real” ghost as they tried to create their own. In the morning Ted had a plan to make Rodney reveal that he’s the killer. Ted wanted to tell Rodney that he knows he’s the killer and let Rodney reveal that he was in fact the killer. Things seemed to backfire though as Rodney disagreed, forcing Adam to turn and believe Ted was in fact the killer. I know it sounds confusing, but that’s really how it came off on the show. A little further down the tunnel Cody walked alone and was told by the Mastermind to find a package and read it with the others. Inside were newspaper clippings about killed high schoolers, allowing some to make the connection of their next “haunted” location.
As night fell the players jumped on a bus and landed at the haunted school. Inside Leah, who has been surprisingly calm the entire show, began to freak out. A shrine for the six murdered students was laid out in the main hall. The challenge was to find a ring hidden in one of the classrooms. The six players to find a ring would be safe, while the losers would go to the execution ceremony. Things got even more crazy as explosions began happening around them. The school wasn’t the most clean either as things were written on the walls and items were thrown all over the place. The school was more like a huge haunted house than a real “school” but it sure seemed freaky. Cody got all into things while looking for his ring as he dissected a pig’s throat. He was the first to be safe while Nasser found the second while reaching into a deflated football. Inside the drama room Rodney was freaked out when a manikin came to life, forcing him to fall over. With Rodney out of the manikin room Adam was able to find the key and gain the third key. Ted was the next to get his ring while digging in pinata intestines and Erica the next while digging into a fish. Ted helped Melyssa gain the last clue, sending Rodney to the Execution Ceremony and showing their alliance was dead. Leah was heading to the execution ceremony as well.
