Soiltary 3.0 had a super fan this season and his name was RobRob. If you were a fan of Solitary you probably felt right there with him as he represented everyone who loves reality tv and finally got the chance of their dreams. We got the chance to ask RobRob a few questions about his life as Solitary 3.0’s Pod 4. He let’s us know how Val’s experience compared to his home built Pod and how his life has changed since the show.

Congrats on making the final two RobRob and congrats on getting on the show! It seems hard lately for fans of any reality show to get cast. What are your suggestions for those who want to apply for future seasons of Solitary or their favorite reality shows?

Thank you.  It was like a dream come true.  When anyone asks me about getting on the show, I like to direct them to the testimonial I wrote for the website which I got cast from www.realitywanted.com.  The direct link is http://www.realitywanted.com/newsitem/1616-a-note-from-realitywanted-member-rob-hekal-of-solitary-30.

Can you let us in on how you practiced for the show? You said many times that you practiced things like counting the minutes and writing backwards. Were these things you knew Val would throw at you are just things you did for fun?

To practice for the show, I built my own pod in my living room.  I decided to make it half the size of a real pod so the real one wouldn’t feel so confining.  I practiced most of the tests and treatments from the first two seasons.  But my main focus was on the 8 things that were similar between the first two seasons like beds of nails, eating, spinning, brain washing, time estimation, sleep deprivation etc… As you could see, my time estimation was horrible even after all of my practice.  It was shocking.  At first I tried to make excuses for it like Val counting or the eulogy, but we were all under the same conditions, so I just sucked and deserved to be hung from the ropes.  As for writing backwards, I have been doing that since I was a child.  I even taught myself to write left handed, and write backwards with both hands.  No one knows what Val is going to throw at them while in Solitary.  Most of the angst is caused because of this fact of never knowing what she is going to do to us next.

Was the experience of Solitary 3.0 what you thought it would be and how did it compare to the Pod that you built in your home. Did the preparation help you get to the finals?

It was everything I expected and more.  But nothing compares to the real pod with a VAL that actually talks back to you.  However, it was also soooo much harder than I ever thought it would be.  And it was soooo much hotter.  I should have turned my heat up to 100 degrees in my place when I practiced everything.  I think the preparation got me through things like the Rocky Road, Flesh Clips, Gluttony, and the VALphabet.  But again, it didn’t help me with the Time Estimation.

While in your pod who did you think was your biggest competition. Did anyone surprise you after watching the show?

While in my pod, I thought that #9 was my biggest competition.  After he went home, I thought #7 was my biggest competition.  #3 and #8’s determination really impressed me.

If you could have changed one thing about your time in Solitary what would it be and why? Also what was your favorite test/treatment/task throughout the time you spent there?

If I could have changed one thing, it would have been the outfit that I wore.  It was so hot in there and I was so uncomfortable.  And once I started losing weight, my pants barely fit and I had to keep pulling them up and rolling up the pants legs.  And I probably wouldn’t have wasted all my precious energy rollerblading around my pod for hours.  If I had to pick one favorite thing, I would have to say I had the most fun with the VALphabet, but it didn’t get me out of kissing VAL’s glass.

Do you think that you could have won the game had Pod 7 been in the rope treatment and you would have had time to relax? Or do you think it just came down to who could hold up their arms longer?

After Solitary, I spent a couple weeks beating myself up about what things I could have done differently in order to win.  If I had estimated time better, I wouldn’t have been on the ropes, so my arms would have been fresher.  And if I had won the gumball maze, I wouldn’t have had the penalty round and that could have made the difference.  But after watching the show and seeing how well #7 performed in everything through out the season, I honestly think that the best man won and I was honored to compete against him.  He helped push me to new levels of insanity.

How has Solitary changed your life and how have things been since the show ended? Do you have any suggestions for Solitary 4.0? It would be interesting to see you on an All Stars season!

Solitary was an incredible life changing experience.  I finally opened my eyes and realize the importance of family and friends and to stop being a workaholic.  I also learned patience.  I’ve continued to test my limits since I’ve been back.  Maybe it will help me if there is a Solitary All-Stars Season.  But then again, maybe not.  Therein lies the rub.
