The Amazing Race Premiers Its 13th Season
September 28, 2008 6:55 pm Amazing Race, CBSThe Amazing Race is back for its 13th season and after winning their sixth Emmy in a row they have a lot to stand up for. Starting once again in Los Angeles, California the new 11 teams began from the Colosseum in California. After getting to know the teams the race began as the teams learned they were to fly to Belize for their first leg. Airport troubles once again struck as most of the teams went into the wrong line for tickets. After finding the new line Terence/Sarah, Mark/Bill, Aja/Ty, Nick/Starr, Kelly/Christy and Ken/Tina landed the first flight out.
While in line the frat brothers Andrew and Dan mentioned how they hoped the flight would be delayed, giving them a better shot as the second flight was three hours behind. Some didn’t take to that too well but it did of course jinx the flight as indeed the first flight to Belize was delayed, but not enough to arrive after the second flight. When landing in Belize the teams had to first find a sandwich shop where they would get a clue to transport a candy cart to a plaza. Terence and Sarah pulled out ahead quickly thanks to Sarah being able to talk the language and they landed the first spot on the sign in sheet in the end, giving them a 9:00 departing time.
Nick and Starr, who aligned with their “mom and dad” figures Ken and Tina worked together and checked in only a few minutes following each other. Bill and Mark along with Aja and Ty were together most of the time and also checked in one right after the other. Only Aja and Ty didn’t land a spot on the 9:00 departure list and along with Kelly and Christy would make it on the 9:30 list. The reason Kelly/Christy were so late is that they got lost finding the sandwich shop and was the slowest of the teams on the first flight.
On the second flight to Belize were Andrew/Dan, Marisa/Brooke, Toni/Dallas, Anita/Arthur and Anthony/Stephanie. Although they hated being on the last flight, Andrew and Dan made up for it by being the only team on the second flight to finish the transport and land a spot on the 9:00 list. The Southern belles Maris/Brooke along with mother/son Toni and Dallas, bee keepers and hippies Anita and Arthur and dating couple Anthony and Stephanie ended up on the last time, leaving at 9:45.
As the teams slept and got to know each other through the night some interesting things occurred. Terence and Sarah had a little spat, probably the first of many. Sarah wanted to talk with everyone while Terence felt she should only worry about him. On the other side there were Dallas and Starr who starting flirting. Not sure how far that will go but should be something to watch for. When 9:00 hit it was time for the first team to leave. After finding a certain church their clue directed them to the first Detour. Terence/Sarah and Nick/Starr landed at the clue first and walked right past it. On their way back they found the clue, sending to either climb up several stairs on their knees or climbing down a 200 some foot net attached tot he side of the building.
All of the first five teams ended up taking the “down” method but had some trouble finding how to get there. While they were getting a cab Sarah mentioned to Nick and Starr how hard it was to get one. They didn’t pay any attention to her and this set her off. The rest of the leg all we heard from her and Terrance were “I hate Nick and Starr” but it kind of came out of nowhere. While complaining they ended up missing the door to the elevator for the net, allowing Nick/Starr, Ken/Tina and Bill/Mark to pass them. After doing the climb the four teams ended up at the mat with Nick and Starr coming in first. Next up were Ken and Tina, followed by Terence and Sarah and Mark and Bill coming in fourth place.
With the rest of the other teams grouped together and taking the “easy down” method, frat boys Dan and Andrew decided to be the only ones to do the “hard up” stair climb. They were told they would be asked a question at the top and surely enough it was “how many stairs did you climb up”. Since they didn’t count the first time they had to climb the stairs once again, finally giving the correct answer of 53 stairs. Although we saw many of the teams finish the down climb before them, Andrew and Dan ended up coming in seventh place, just behind Kelly/Christ and Aja/Ty.
With only four teams left it was all about the order they climbed down the net. Since the pit stop was floating just across the street from the climb down detour, it was easy to get there. With Toni/Dallas, Anthony/Stephanie and Marisa/Brooke finishing the climb down first they easily crossed the mat sending the bee loving hippies Anita and Arthur home. Although we didn’t see much of them on the race its almost a good thing as they weren’t as crazy as they looked. We have some good personalities this season and getting rid of the boring first will only make the show better!
