Are You A Realiholic? I am!

Rant, Reality, reality rehash 1 Comment

Fox Reality recently had a show called “Realiholic” and well I feel I am! I’ve been addicted to reality tv since Survivor premiered in the summer of 2000 and then Big Brother right after that. I don’t know what really triggered me to love reality television so much but honestly it’s part of my life. I know it’s kind of lame and dorky but I can admit that I am addicted to raelity. Ok its a different addition then some as it doesn’t really harm you but still it’s an addiction! When I miss an episode I wonder what’s going on, when Big Brother is on I’m constantly updating myself on the house. Sometimes when I travel I image that I’m on the Amazing Race and actually need to get somewhere fast! I even hum the “dun… dun… dun dun dun” tune as I run to my next connection at the airport!

So I know I’m not the only one out there who is “addicted” to reality tv but still it makes me wonder. What is different with reality tv that makes it so much more “addicting” then other shows? Sure some are addicted to sport shows or soaps but still, reality television doesn’t end when you turn off your tv. You can go online and blog (that was Fox Reality’s top way you can tell you are a realiholic) and you can create more of an experience with reality tv. You miss shows when they are on break for the season and I even get withdrawals sometimes! It’s crazy. I know I sound like a broken record but still, it’s something to think about. So are you a realiholic? Leave a comment or post in the message board and let us know!

VH1 “Love Shows” Pronounced Fake

Love Shows, Rant, VH1 No Comments

If you’ve been following any of the VH1 shows for awhile you probably realized that the celebrities on the show don’t always seem to be there for love but at least say they are. Recently this has been seen in Flavor of Love 3 where Flavor Flav didn’t seem interested in any of the women and ended up proposing to none of the 65 girls who fought on the show for his affection. He did though propose on the shows third season finale to Liz, the mother of his latest child and a women who NEVER appeared on any of his shows. To make things even more worse, he says that he knew he was in love with her and wanted to marry her DURING the second season! This means that Flavor Flav knew he wasn’t going to fall in love with any of the girls on the show, although he said he did and did in fact do it for either the money or he was forced it. I’ve lost some respect for the VH1 shows. Of course I’ll probably still watch them but the thought will now always be in my mind.

Now that I got that little bit of info out it’s time for a rant. I LOVE the VH1 reality shows because they are so funny and generally have tons of drama. I also felt that there was at least a touch of realness in the show since at least sometimes it does seem there is love felt between the “celebrity” and at least one contestant. But now that Flavor Flav basically said his show was well all for show that kind of makes me wonder. Were Rock of Love and I Love NY the same as they were forced into it? I mean NY SAYS she’s in love with Tailor Made but is she contracted for a third season so that will have to change? Does Brett Michael’s really care about the girls that are there as he cries while some of them leave or is he crying happy tears knowing he’ll be raking in the cash? It also makes me wonder who in their right mind would even say they would be a “celebrity” on one of these shows now? It’s obvious that people will wonder if the show is real or not since at least two season of Flavor of Love were pronounced pointless by Flavor Flav himself! So yeah I ranted a bit but I think everyone should know what’s going on with VH1. It’s obvious they are in it for the ratings but seriously do they have to keep the people they have when it’s obvious they aren’t there for love?

Real Life Drama Brings VH1 Back to Glory Days

Rant, VH1 No Comments

Over the past few years I’ve found myself very entertained by the reality shows known as “celebreality” that VH1 had to offer. From the Surreal Life, Flavor of Love and now Rock of Love, VH1 was always impressing me with their quality and humor in their shows. Lately though I think they are becoming rather stale and lacking in those shows that just made you laugh without making it see too fake. The numerous copies of the original Flavor of Love are all the same and lately the drama just doesn’t seem to be there for them. They are reusing their same celebrities time and time again and are really overusing their “Love” theme a little too much. With three romance themed series and seven of them either finished or currently airing, it just gets too tiring. Luckily two of their shows have caught my attention and made me love VH1 all over again.

First up we have Scott Baio is 46 & Pregnant. Although this is a sequel to his first season it feels nothing like it. It’s all about his life now that he is a dad and how his life has changed. It is filmed in a very different feel from other shows as it feels almost like a comedy more then reality, even though it is depicting his life. All the people on the show are always adding something to it and it feels “right”. It doesn’t feel contrived too much, like other shows, and offers real life drama which VH1 is lacking on its romance shows.

The second has to be Celebrity Rehab. I didn’t think the show would be as good as it is as I thought it’d be exactly like intervention but with Celebrities. It’s nothing like that as it takes you through their stages of beating their addiction rather then showing you what their addiction does in their real life. It is a real life drama and catches REAL emotions and is just great to watch. Although some of the characters are focused on more then others, each of them had a moment on the show. I can’t wait to see how it ends and hopefully VH1 can pick this up for another season as it’s Celeb-Reality at its best.

Reality TV and the Internet: The Reality “Experience”

Rant, Reality No Comments

Today I realized something that is very important to the sudden boom and long tv life that reality tv shows have had, the INTERNET. Without the Internet and the ability to globally discuss and speculate what happens on reality shows, I don’t think reality tv would be anywhere as popular as its become. Ever since I’ve been watching reality way back when Survivor started, I’ve been talking about it to people on AIM, on message boards and now on this blog. It’s amazing how watching reality shows are so much more then any other shows. You aren’t just watching reality shows once again and wondering whats going to happen next week. You watch the latest episode then hope online to see whats going to happen next or see what others thought about what went down. Reality shows are almost more of a “tv experience” rather then just a show. With the Internet booming more and more everyday I feel reality won’t die anytime soon. I mean even if it dies on TV it won’t die online I’m sure. Media is moving towards the Internet everyday and reality has a huge advantage there as it’s been using the internet all along.

Since When Were Gameshows Reality?

Deal or No Deal, Game Shows, Gladiators, Rant, Reality No Comments

Ever since Fear Factor aired I wondered what made it a reality show and not a game show. I mean people are there for maybe 3 days max and we only see them doing competitions and never see footage from outside the “game”. Now every new game show is jumping on the reality bandwagon and classifying themselves as a “reality game show”. I really don’t understand the point of trying to gain reality fans by just saying you are a reality show but it works for them I guess. The one main one I’m annoyed with is Deal or No Deal. I mean first of all its the simplest game show on the world that’s completely based on luck and all the contestants do is stand on a platform and open cases.

Now just think about this, compare Deal or No Deal to Survivor or say Big Brother. These shows last weeks if not months and the contestants are put through torture at times to win a large sum of money. This, in my mind, is a reality show. People are continuously playing a game while their personal lives during that time are recorded as well. Now look at Deal or No Deal. People are taped for the GAME only and hardly any footage outside the game is shown. Most game shows last a few hours when taping and no shows currently airing put their players through what reality show contestants are put through.

Now you may say that the new Gladiators is considered a reality show… but wait what did they consider the FIRST Gladiators? Yes my friend it was called a GAME SHOW. There is no reality in Gladiators… I mean the gladiators themselves are basically actors playing a role. Of course they may have SOME reality components to them but when do we see the players longer then a few days? When do we see them outside the arena other then home footage? We don’t, and that’s why Gladiators, Deal or Not Deal and all their reality wannabe friends are NOT Reality Shows. Simple as that.
