American Idol, Big Brother 9, CBS, FOX, Reality

As we all know Big Brother is starting up in about two weeks for its first ever winter edition. One thing you may not have realized is that it’s new Sunday/Tuesday/Wednesday format puts two out of the three episodes competing directly with American Idol. American Idol has claimed several casualties in it’s seven years of being on the air, Jericho almost being one of them. The ratings that AI pulls away from other shows has crippled networks during this time and that’s why it often has no competition.
Until this winter that is with the special return of Big Brother. Now my worry is that BB will not fair well against the ratings juggernaut of American Idol. I know Big Brother has its fans, and well I’m one of them, but what will happen to those people who MUST see both BB and AI? They will have to choose obviously and for some it may not be too easy. So here is my question to you all. If you are deciding between Big Brother 9 and American Idol on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, which will you choose? I’m going for BB all the way, since I don’t watch AI after the auditions anyway but I’m just curious (and hoping) if Big Brother can fair against the all mighty powerhouse that is American Idol. I only got to see the last hour of the Philly American Idol auditions and I must say they weren’t that bad! They had a great mix of good and bad people, bad as in hilarious to watch. I was somewhat shocked to see the toned down actions from the judges, or at least that’s just how I saw it. They weren’t as harsh as last time and the people weren’t anywhere as strange acting or looking as the past season. The only thing I was ashamed to watch was the poor guy who waxed his chest. I mean he went through all that, he walks back into the room for two seconds and they send him right back out! I mean seriously why put someone through all that for no reason, it makes no sense and honestly wasn’t that “good tv” they thought it would be. It was more upsetting then humorous. I was also sad to see that none of the local from my area of Pennsylvania weren’t on the show. It’s the first time it was held in Philly so I was expecting a ton of locals to show up, but on the last hour I watched I saw nobody. American Idol has only began and it seems so much different already. Hopefully it carries this tune throughout the season and makes up for all the horrible people they had last season!

As we’ve all heard three American Idol stars have been dropped by the same record label all within a week of each other. Two winners: Ruben and Taylor and a runner up Katherine were all dropped by the same record label due to poor sales in their records. Although all three made it as far as possible in the talent competition, this does not seem to correlate well to record sales. Of course there have been several big name players generated from the show and it still has the best ratings ever it seems like producers are scrambling thanks to the recent bad news.
Simon Cowell is reporting that he’ll be leaving the show sometime soon if they don’t find good talent in this season and producers have also said the show seemed to showcase less talent but more ‘flair’ in past seasons. They are also claiming that the new season starting on Tuesday will not have celebrity judges or will focus more on those celebrities who are popular now rather then in the 80s, 70s or even 60s as they have had in the past.
In all honestly I don’t get the hype over American Idol anymore. Only two of the winners have become actual “music stars” along with a few who didn’t come in first or even close to it. I watch the show for the first half only, the auditions. After that I don’t tune in but still keep some track of whats going on because well… it’s all over the place. It’s a mega hit in ratings but with the last few years of less then spectacular singers and winners, can the show hang on? I know for a fact that many people hate Simon Cowell but will the show even exist if he’s not on it anymore? There are a few questions surrounding the new season of American Idol. I’m sure it will do well but if he doesn’t overdo itself for the past few failures they might have a hard time selling to new and veteran fans.
